We are Chris and Paula McNutt and we are fulltime missionaries at Hope of Life International. We have been here full time since January of 2017 but our hearts have been here since the first time we came in February of 2010. We came to Hope of Life International with another church. Our church is a very small country church that had never gone on an international mission trip. We thought it would be a one-time trip but God had so many other plans. Our prayer for that first trip was that God would break our hearts for what breaks His. We encountered poverty like we had never seen before in the village of Pueblo Modelo and our hearts were truly broken for the people of Guatemala the day we visited this community. We are so grateful for how God has used this experience in our life and how He has shown us His love through these precious people.
We returned home with so much excitement about all that God was doing at Hope of Life. We could not wait to share it with our church and bring back our own mission team. Later that year in October, we returned with 13 others from our church, Mt Comfort UMC in Appomattox, Virginia. We built two houses that trip. One house would be in Hope of Life village.
That was the first time we walked down the dusty road of Hope of Life village. Our hearts broke for these children and we were filled with love and compassion. We fell in love with the families of Hope of Life Village and over the next several years we began a Total Village Transformation. Paula and I became leaders of the Mt Comfort Guatemala Mission and together with our team and it’s many supporters we began building a church, clean water system, preschool/tutoring center, vocational school, kitchens, bathrooms, electricity and several other needs to complete the community project. Today with the addition of Causelife village, we have close to 300 residents in the community.
In 2014, Paula and I, in partnership with Hope of Life, started the Mt Comfort Guatemala Mission Child Sponsorship Program which is now the Passion 4 Guatemala child sponsorship program. This program gives all the children in our village the opportunity to continue their education at Liberty college on the campus of HOL after completing the sixth grade. Our sponsorship program also helps with education, shoes, clothes, medical needs, and school supplies.
When the Mount Comfort Guatemala Mission was formed, we claimed: Ephesians 3:20-21
“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.”
We come from a very small church and God was giving us dreams that exceeded anything that we were capable of doing. But not more than He was capable of doing! We prayed that He would exceed all our expectations and use this ministry in ways we could not have dreamed. He never disappoints! We could not have imagined all He would do through this mission and the many people that support its purpose! We could have never imagined that one day He would ask us to move and to live among the people He called us to serve, our family and friends in Guatemala.
Paula and I are both nurses by profession. Surgery is our specialty. We serve as nurses in medical clinics both on campus, in other villages and in our village. We help with the educational needs here at the ministry by teaching English at Liberty College.
However, our calling, is full time missionaries to the Hope of Life/Causelife village, a community within Hope of Life International. Our focus is spiritual needs, physical wellbeing, education, prosperity and economic self-reliance. We were called to live among the people, do life together, and build relationships; called to be the hands and feet of Christ in service and love. Our ministry in the village consists of, but is not limited to, youth ministry, children’s ministry and adult ministry. We tutor the children in English. We also started an economic project called Sueño canastas. This project allows people to learn a trade and sell their product to support their families. Please click here to learn how you can support this project Sueño Canastas and Totes.
In 2020, Passion 4 Guatemala became a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity organization that empowers, equips and provides opportunities for a better future to the people of Guatemalan in the name of Jesus Christ through ministry, education, community and job training.
God has shown us exactly where He wants us to be and we want to be exactly where He has called us. God gives us all a great purpose that is so much beyond all we could have dreamed or imagined. We are thankful and blessed to be a part of Hope of Life International and all that God is doing here.
All of our projects support our ministry and Paula and I are solely supported by churches and individuals who have partnered with us to bring hope to these beautiful people.
